History at Belmont
Intent
Our History curriculum inspires curiosity about the past, helping pupils understand the world today and see themselves reflected in a diverse curriculum. Through studying Britain, the wider world, and their local area of Harrow and London, pupils develop a strong sense of identity, heritage, and cultural capital.
We aim to develop historians who:
-
Know key events, people, and societies in Britain and beyond.
-
Understand chronology, substantive concepts (e.g. empire, trade, invasion), and historical interconnections.
-
Use enquiry, analysis, and evidence to form conclusions.
-
Communicate their findings clearly through discussion, writing, and creative expression.
-
Hold informed, balanced opinions and a genuine curiosity about the past.
Implementation
History is taught in half-termly topics, discretely and through cross-curricular links. Planning includes:
-
Knowledge organisers with key facts and vocabulary.
-
Sequenced lessons that build skills and knowledge.
-
Low-stakes quizzes to support memory and retrieval.
-
Challenge questions to promote deeper thinking.
-
Trips and visitors to enrich learning.
-
Themed home learning to extend study.
Impact
Pupils make strong progress, demonstrating secure knowledge, vocabulary, and skills over time. They enjoy history, speak confidently about their learning, and connect past and present. Pupils use evidence critically, form conclusions, and understand multiple interpretations, showing that they “know more, remember more, and can do more.”
