Writing at Belmont

How we teach Writing at Belmont School

Intent
At Belmont, our writing curriculum engages pupils through rich stimuli including texts, visual prompts, and real-life experiences. It develops spoken language, vocabulary, reading as writers, transcription, and composition skills. High-quality teaching ensures pupils use standard English and grammar confidently across all writing.

We aim to inspire fluent, enthusiastic writers who can write for a range of purposes, developing cultural capital and preparing them to succeed academically and in life.

Implementation
We follow the Literacy Tree, a whole-school approach built around high-quality children’s literature. Pupils encounter a wide range of authors and genres, using books as the context for National Curriculum requirements. Writing opportunities are purposeful, with clear audiences and varied genres, from recounts and reports to poetry and plays. Drama, role-play, storytelling, and discussion build imagination before moving into vocabulary, sentence craft, and extended writing.

English is taught as whole-class lessons with targeted support and scaffolding for those who need it, and extension opportunities for pupils working at mastery level. Skills and knowledge are revisited across phases, ensuring depth, variety, and progression.

Impact
Writing is assessed continuously to inform teaching, personalise feedback, and provide clear next steps. Progression is tracked through moderation and pupil voice.

By the end of Belmont, pupils will:

  • Write confidently in standard English with secure grammar and spelling.

  • Use a wide vocabulary and write clearly across genres, considering purpose and audience.

  • Take pride in presentation with a legible, cursive style.

The Literacy Tree for Parents/Carers

Throughout the school, from Reception to Year 6, we use Literacy Tree for our teaching of English. Literacy Tree is used across the UK and globally and is an award-winning educational platform. All the Literacy Tree resources use high-quality children’s books and for Writing, we follow their Teach Through a Text approach to ensure there is consistency throughout the school.

It also supports to create high levels of engagement as it immerses children in the text whilst covering the objectives fully in the curriculum. The text choices are an important part of this as well - many link to aspects of History and/or encourage deep discussions. We pride ourselves on our diverse choices.
